Midsummer MELTDOWN
If your idea of outdoor relaxation is akin to those azure-sky, turquoise-water Corona commercials, then these chairs created by California-based sculptor Bruce Gray may be just what you've been seeking. Gray's contemporary and abstract modern metal and wood sculptures are widely recognized, displayed at art galleries and museums from Santa Monica to Soho and abroad. Although his works are varied, his functional art pieces are quickly gaining mainstream recognition; he is reputed for having an uncanny ability to capture kinetic forms, a mood - and even emotion. The Marguerita Chair (bottom) $2000, for example, is a modish siightly altered lounge chair, but it has two side panels attached to the frame so you'll never need to disrupt your siesta session to get a drink, a book, etc. Display the Meltdown Chair (top), $2500, in your yard in the sweltering heat and watch your guests gasp at its simulation of molten metal. Besides, because of its glowing red color and its unexpected irregularity, it'll give your garden unique character. And you can actually sit on it. Brucegray.com
